It is crucial to emphasize that these calculators cannot accurately determine the type of fuel being burned (fat or glucose), which is a pivotal measure in the context of both weight loss and overall health. As a result, personalized and comprehensive assessments, such as metabolic testing, play a crucial role in providing more accurate and individualized insights into energy needs and fuel utilization.
Metabolism testing involves a brief 5-10 minute breath analysis, conducted in a semi-reclined position. Throughout the test, we encourage you to relax and breathe naturally through the mouthpiece. The key parameters assessed during this process allow our practitioners to tailor programs according to each client’s unique metabolism:
1. Resting Metabolic Rate (Calories) – Determines the speed of your metabolism.
2. Fuel Utilization (Fat vs Glucose) – Assesses the burning of appropriate fuels for effective weight loss.
3. Energy Efficiency (%) – Gauges the efficiency of your cells.
For body composition testing, you will be asked to lie on your back, allowing us to attach electrodes to your wrist and ankle. This assessment helps our practitioners ensure that weight loss predominantly targets fat rather than muscle, as maintaining muscle is crucial for long-term weight management and chronic disease control. The key parameters assessed include:
1. Fat Mass
2. Active Tissue Mass
3. Hydration Status
Additionally, MHS recommends a metabolic pathology screen to identify potential energy disorders, a facet that may not be routinely screened by your health professional. This proactive measure enhances monitoring, management, and overall outcomes.
